Bow shackle type C

Shackles

Shackles are most often used to connect chain slings, wire rope slings, synthetic slings and below the hook devices together into a lift ready state. We can use them to:

  • lift;
  • pull;
  • tie down;
  • attach;

Shackles are different between each other in shape, pin and material type.

Shackle types

Two most used types of shackles are bow/anchor and chain/D shackle. Besides this two there are others, but are used far less often that this two.

Bow/anchor types

Bow/anchor shackles is the most often used type of shackle. If compered to chain shackle it has an “O” style top. Because of this it can be side loaded as well, similar to master links. Because of this it has many advantages out in the field. When we side load the shackle we have to keep in mind that WLL will have to be adjusted accordingly.

Benefits:

  • side loading;
  • long service life span;
  • easy to use;
  • in stock in sizes from 330kg to 35t;
  • available in size up to 1550t;

Chain shackle

Chain shackle doesn’t have a bow like a bow anchor shackle does. Because of this this type of shackles can’t be side loaded. If we side load chain shackle it could bend and twist. Because of this the shackle would have to be discontinued from use.

Benefits:

  • long service life span;
  • easy to use;
  • lighter;
  • available in size up to 63t;

Shackle pin types

Shackles come with three different pin options. The pin can be screw pin/type A, bolt type/type C or round pin/type B. What pin type is the best, depends on what we do with the shackle.

Type A

Type A or screw pin shackle are the best if we have to reattach the shackle often. But if the shackle is going to be installed for a long time or is going to experience vibrations when installed, then this it isn’t the pin type that should be used.

Benefits:

  • easy to use;
  • quick to install;
  • in stock from 330kg to 35t;
  • available in sizes up to 1550t

Type C

Type C or bolt type shackle pin is the safest. But the problem is that it takes longer to install. This shackle is designed to be installed for long periods of type, as it won’t loosen up over time. They are perfect for long installations, installations where vibrations are going to be present and where shackle is going to experience twisting and torque.

Benefits:

  • easy to use;
  • safer;
  • long term installations;
  • in stock from 330kg to 35t;
  • available in WLL to 1550t;
